Report: Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Transformation Programme

Independent Reconfiguration Panel – 21stDecember 2023

This report from the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) provides advice and recommendations to Health Minister Lord Markham about the concerns raised by Telford & Wrekin Council to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care about the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Transformation Programme.

The NHS proposal aims to reconfigure health services at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford which are both led by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and are part of the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System.

The independent report discusses:

  • the provision of NHS healthcare in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin for the residents of mid Wales
  • the NHS capital funding allocation
  • the ‘A&E Local’ model at the Princess Royal Hospital
  • ambulance response times and transfers between the hospital sites
  • changes to population demographics
  • recommendations for the future of NHS services in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin

It follows previous IRP advice to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on the reconfiguration of acute hospital services in Shrewsbury and Telford which was published in 2019.

Healthcare Leader – 2023

This report looks at how artificial intelligence (AI) will impact health care. It builds on Healthcare Leader’s roundtable Healthcare data: how ICBs can encourage patient trust with data experts and integrated care board (ICB) leaders and is informed by a survey on attitudes to AI among Healthcare Leader’s audience. The findings highlight the tension between the positive attitudes to AI among leading clinicians set against the concerns around data sharing. It also outlines the potential and pitfalls of AI in health care where leaders in the field discuss current successes and concerns.
